Honoured with the 2021 Tourism Resiliency Award: A Recognition of Sustainability and Strength
At Elmhirst’s Resort, resilience has always been part of our story. So when we were awarded the Tourism Resiliency Award in 2021, it felt like a powerful affirmation—not just of how we adapted through the challenges of the pandemic but of the long-term vision and values that guide everything we do.
Presented by TIAO (Tourism Industry Association of Ontario), the Tourism Resiliency Award celebrates organizations that demonstrate innovation, leadership, and a commitment to sustainability in the face of adversity. For us, it was more than just weathering a storm—it was about looking at how we could emerge from 2020 stronger, more innovative, and even more focused on our impact.
Resiliency Through Sustainability
Sustainability has never been a trend at Elmhirst’s—it’s been a way of life for generations. In December 2020, we earned GOLD certification from GreenStep Sustainable Tourism 2030, North America’s leading sustainable tourism certification program. The comprehensive assessment process confirmed that we were on the right path but also gave us a clearer focus: measuring key environmental and social impacts, setting long-term goals, and improving.
In the words of our General Manager, Greg Elmhirst:
“The Sustainable Tourism 2030 certification validated much of our work so far but highlighted some important next steps. The changes caused by the unprecedented challenges of 2020 created an opportunity to look at Elmhirst’s Resort in new ways and implement new solutions.”
From reducing energy use and supporting local growers to eliminating unnecessary waste and creating meaningful guest experiences, every part of our operation is shaped by a deep respect for the land, our team, and the community around us.
Adapting With Purpose
Like many in the tourism industry, 2020 pushed us to rethink and reimagine. We restructured experiences, adapted health protocols, and looked for ways to keep the magic of Elmhirst’s alive—safely and responsibly.
We found new ways to serve our guests while staying true to our roots. We leaned on our values, embraced innovation, and supported each other. The result wasn’t just resilience—it was renewal.
A Shared Recognition
Winning the Tourism Resiliency Award was a moment of pride for every team member. It recognized the hard work, heart, and commitment that got us through challenging times, and it reminded us that sustainability and resiliency go hand in hand.
We’re incredibly grateful to TIAO for the honour, and to our guests and community for supporting us through it all. As we progress, we’ll continue to lead purposefully—protecting what makes Elmhirst’s unique and ensuring it thrives for generations.
