What is Tui Na Massage?
TuiNa massage, pronounced ‘twee-nah’ is an ancient form of therapeutic massage from China dating back to 2700 BC, and is still used widely in China and around the world. It is widely believed to be the oldest form of bodywork.
The technique combines rhythmic compressions along energy channels along with pressure on the body at key acupressure points, and is focused on maintaining overall balance between physical and mental health.
Tui Na is focused on using the positive energy of the body, and it is related to acupuncture in its use of the Meridian system. The goal of Tui Na massage is to establish or restore the harmonious flow of Qi (Chee) throughout the body, thereby bringing it back to balance.
The technique employs rhythmic compressions that resemble some deep tissue techniques from some western massage, and include kneading, gliding, vibration, tapping, pulling and rolling, pressing and shaking.
TuiNa also uses acupressure. Pressure is applied at different acupressure points of the body to affect the flow of Qi, which facilitates healing and removes blockages. Movement of energy through the meridians and the muscles is maintained, and tension is relieved.
Tui Na therapists are able to focus on a specific problem, whether acute or chronic, and the therapy is especially effective for muscle pain, joint pain, sciatica and neck pain. More than just a therapeutic treatment, TuiNa is also widely used as a preventative measure. The treatments are both relaxing and energizing.
