All the very best to you and yours for 2012

Our New Years Eve Sparkling Celebration saw the old year out with an evening of tiaras, bubbles, champagne, fine food, humour and comeraderie.  Billy Munnelly, author of the publication Billy’s Best Bottles introduced a sparkling wine with each course at dinner and entertained the crowd.  Frothy decor and glittering headgear added to the festivities.  A great night out!

Enjoying Winter

December 30, 2011 · 1 Comment

It seems we must enjoy each day of winter on Rice Lake as the weatherman threatens rain…..I love this time of year, the news is filled with recaps of the top stories, radio stations play the most popular tunes of the year and we at Elmhirst’s Resort say thanks for another wonderful year with our guests and friends.  Whatever you are doing to celebrate the last twelve months and welcome the new year  -  be safe!

Return of the Finch

Fresh snow and eureka…the finches return to the feeders on the Resort.  The entertainment factor was high as they appeared to be jockeying for position on the niger seed feeder.  Welcome back!

Winter Wonderland

It’s winter…lovely blue skies, snow covering the ground, snowmobile trails groomed, ice on the lake (not safe yet), rosy cheeks and crispy air.  This photo was taken at dusk with my iphone.  I wanted to capture the moment tfor you.

Susan Pickett (red blouse) celebrated a milestone birthday with friends in the wine cellar – bummer, having a birthday at Christmas – no turkey was served at this reception!  No turkey meat either.  (ha ha).  Happy Birthday Susan.

TImes are changing….I cannot find a single person who is making a New Years resolution….of course we all want to exercise more but so far no firm commitments….why is that?

Homecoming Weekend for returning guests….Jan 06-08   Join us – it’s usually the best weekend of the winter.

My Menagerie

December 27, 2011 · 3 Comments

Hunter, the concierge dog, is suffering from sibling rivalry as Whiskers joins our little menagerie.  Whiskers and her brother were dropped off at the Resort and left to fend for themselves in a box by the wood shed…..Jack has found a home at Stephen’s with Oliver (the cottage wanderer cat) and Whiskers will stay with us (she seems to like us).  It’s amazing how people can abandon animals in the cold of winter and drive away…..we are not cat people but really……

Tonight we had snow and a regional power outage….sitting by the fire, talking, with our pets, seemed strange but comforting somehow.  Thankfully Hydro One was operating for the Leafs game.

New Years Eve is fast approaching – there are still some seats available for the Sparkling Celebration Dinner and wine pairing event …only $99 pp.  Get your gang together and celebrate!   Wilma may have a cottage or two for those who don’t want to drive home.

Our bald eagle returned to check out the ice in front of the Resort today….the crows were trying to make friends.  It was quite a sight!

Horse-drawn Sleighride

The traditional Christmas Eve carol sing on the horse-drawn sleigh was lively, considering the -7 degree temperature.  Whiie sipping on hot chocolate we were treated to a reading of The Night Before Christmas by Chuck Bond (thanks Chuck) before braving the elements and singing the favourites.  Sweet dreams to all.

Sunrise on Rice Lake – what a sight!  Imagine yourself here for the next two weeks…..you can almost hear the silence.

The geese were hard pressed to find a landing pad this morning….they looked like they needed a rest when they finally set down.
