Halloween Spirits

Alter-ego gremlins frequented the dark hallows tonight, in search of treats (what’s up with that trick part?). The sweet haul will be included in school lunches for quite awhile. Guests arriving at the Resort were greeted by Cindy the Cat…..she seemed harmless. Have a safe night!
Flying In, Flying Out
October 30, 2011 · 2 Comments
It was a perfect day for a fall fly-in…….we welcomed the Embrum Flying Club for Sunday Brunch – who doesn’t love to see a collection of aircraft (especially when they are so colourful). Activity galore with birds, floatplanes and kiteboarders on the water; planes coming and going on the runway; horseback riders and hikers……..where else would you want to be?

The view from the farm makes it worth the walk!
Cyclocross Event
October 29, 2011 · Leave a Comment
The Peterborough Cycing Club held a Cyclocross Race today at Elmhirst’s Resort. Winners Zac Wheeler and Tanya MacNeil led the pack through the woods, through hairpin turns, over obstacles – on trails and gravel, with short climbs and surprises. Cyclocross races are held in spring and fall when the weather is not so good…..the course appears to be designed to create sudden changes in tempo and terrain – easier to watch than take part in.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun……and we love to help with spa services, food and beverage…..so much more. Get your girlfriends together for a weekend of “no worries” girl power time.
Congratulations to Katie Hill, the last woman standing in the Rice Lake Snowdrifters Annual Elmination Draw – she will choose between a snowmobile, ATV or cash prize.
Bring Food Home Feast

Bring Food Home came to Elmhirst’s Resort tonight for their Feast…..the Sustain Ontario Conference is being held in Peterborough at Trent University – designed to bring farmers, suppliers and local producers together to learn from each other. It was quite a night with meetings, tastings, networking and good food. Kudos to Stephen Elmhirst and his kitchen team for delivering an amazing local dinner with flare – the service team was attentive and professional – I was very proud to hear positive comments all evening. The room looked so inviting, especially with the pumpkin centrepieces (thanks to Martina).
It’s a Beautiful Morning

Early risers were treated to the magnificent scenes of the morning sun on the water. This is a great time to take a getaway, sit by the fire in your cottage, watch the birds and walk through the fallen leaves. Try a fine wine from the County with your choice from the new Hearthside menu, after your massage…….ahhhhhhh
Visiting woodpeckers are creating chaos with the resident bluejays….I’ll keep an eye on them!

What a game….even if you aren’t a baseball fan the excitement of Game 6 would be enough to make you want to watch Game 7 for the World Series clincher.
Ontario Out of Doors
October 26, 2011 · 1 Comment
We love the article “Rice Lake Rendezvous” in the Ontario Out of Doors Fall 2011 issue. James Smedley, Travel Editor, has published a story that reminded us of how we got our start….catering to anglers who returned to Rice Lake again and again because they loved to fish the prolific waters. We hear that fishing may not be a travel motivator any more…..how can that be? Remember what it was like to go out early in the morning with your dad to find that elusive muskie? How cool it was to reel in sunfish for dinner? How many of us got to know our grandfathers by sitting in the boat, munching on bacon sandwiches and just talking about everything – catching a fish was a bonus! Wouldn’t it be great to see fishing emerge as a “new” pastime……with past guests introducing their love of fishing to the next generations? We’ll be expecting you next summer!
Ice fishing is now available on Rice Lake….come on out this winter and enjoy one of the simple pleasures of life. Why not include a fishing trip on your Grandparents Weekend* with us.
Go to Papparazzi to read the whole story.
*Grandparents Weekend includes 2 nights accommodation, breakfast and dinner daily, a shared activity (such as fishing, sightseeing flight, ATV Safari), movies and a souvenir photo of your time together. Ask about our special rates. Great Christmas gift!
Witch Post?

Halloween must be happening soon if the Keene witch has hit the post…..my favourite decoration at this time of year. No matter how late I am or where I have to go this always makes me smile as I drive by! The homes in Keene look lovely with their Pumpkin Festival decor outdoors.
Happy 95th Uncle Bob
Many happy returns
Wonders of the Sky
October 24, 2011 · Leave a Comment
Despite the threat of rain all day the night sky was a mere backdrop for the geese flying south and the cloud formations across the lake. What a night to sit on your cottage deck and watch the world go by.
Almost time to get your Halloween costume out of storage…..I love seeing the creativity of the local kids as they trick or treat (of course I’m serving up healthy wrapped snacks- we like them too).
We are expecting the Sustain Ontario Bring Food Home delegates for dinner on Friday and the local Rice Lake SnowDrifters for their annual fundraiser on Saturday – great opportunity for the kitchen to show their stuff! If you aren’t involved with either group please join us for Sunday Brunch.
Great Day to be Outdoors
October 23, 2011 · Leave a Comment
The morning sun was bright….duck hunters were out on the lake; the colours were brilliant; it was a perfect day to take a motorcycle ride.
Destination: ZimArt Gallery near Bailieboro. The outdoor gallery is situated in the woods with walking trails, ponds and open seating areas – the stone carvings are done by artists from Zimbabwe (an artist in residence is featured each year). Highly recommended as a day trip when you are staying at Elmhirst’s Resort. (issues with downloading photos so stay tuned for my collection).
