Holy Pumpkins Batman
September 30, 2011 · 1 Comment
Pumpkins everywhere in the country….carts with serve yourself signs and a huge pumpkin patch (on County Rd 2 between Mathers Corners and Keene) with prize winning pumpkins (estimated to be over 300 lbs). Plan to attend the Keene Pumpkin Festival October 22…..it’s a happening day with a street fair and activities for the family!
The early morning sun held promise but you could see the front moving in – the day ended with a steady rain. Fingers crossed for the Kawartha Fall Colour Cycling Tour tomorrow morning. We expect seasonal temperatures….get those sweaters out!
Wild Blue Yonder for Hockey
September 29, 2011 · 1 Comment
The WIld Blue Yonder Pub is the place to be if you want to catch a hockey game (even pre-season) – it looks like the players also want to be here! The room is filled with airplanes and flying machines as well as hockey stuff….lots to look at and the menu is tasty as well.
Mission accomplished….a pair of scarecrows appeared to complete the autumn display. Whew!
It’s Raining…..finally
September 28, 2011 · 2 Comments
After several days of weather watch warnings for precipitation we finally have rain…..who doesn’t look forward to a rainy day? I found a lovely little book called “Never Sell Your Hen on a Rainy Day” by Shirley Byers Lalonde. I’ll share afew gems with you……Geese high, fair sky (if geese are flying high the high pressure allows them to fly thousands of feet in the air – on low pressure days they fly closer to the ground). Falling barometric pressure brings rain……watch the animals….cats and dogs eat grass before a rain……Trout jump high when a rain is high…..expect stormy weather when ants travel in a straight line. When they scatter all over the weather is fine. Each rhyme is attached to a folklore tale – for example bees never get caught in the rain because they stay home when the high cirrus clouds are formed….bees will not swarm before a rain. Of course there are favourites we have heard from childhood – when the dew is on the grass, rain will never come to pass….red sky at night, sailors delight – red sky in the morning, sailors warning….you’ve heard them, I’m sure.
Lastly, the adage ”Do business best when the wind is in the west” is good advice for anyone wanting to book a meeting here….the prevailing west wind should help your agenda!

The fall season begins with a new harvest display (crafted by Martina) at the entrance to the main office – it was looking a little sparse so I put out an audition notice for scarecrows….unfortunately Cindy (front desk and Spa) did not look scary enough…..still searching! Makes me think of Thanksgiving – have you booked your cottage yet? It’s usually a wonderful weekend with walks in the crisp air, wine tasting, turkey dinner with pumpkin pie, afternoon naps and the Norwood Fair….not to be missed!
This coming weekend the Kawartha Fall Colour Cycle Tour will take to the hills and dales…..if you are a serious or wanna be cyclist you’ll want to join the tour. Details available at our Front Desk or at Wildrock Outfitters in Peterborough.
Good News for Seniors…….two night minimum stay (as opposed to three night minimum stay) allowed in October for Seniors getting away. Seniors rate offers 25% reduction.

Sunday mornings the Hearthside and Heritage Dining Rooms transform into a feast of hot and cold foods, salads, baked goods and desserts – complete with wonderful aromas. Pianoman Ron Goodacre adds his soft magic to the air and the sun shines in, trying to get a better look at the buffet tables. Breakfast items, fresh smoothies, carved roasts and a complete seafood table tempt you before you get to the sweets and pastries. Children (and some adults) enjoy the cupcake decorating area….creativity reigns.
We love to see families after church, groups celebrating everything from babies to retirements and any occasion in-between. If you haven’t experienced our Sunday Brunch - you must! Weekend of Colour

What a day – two weddings, a pizza party, a hockey tournament and lots of activity on the water! The day started off wet and gloomy but the sun came out for the early afternoon bride and it just got better….we picked apples and made pies – a perfect task for such a beautiful autumn day.
Congratulations to Ron Pellerine (Jr) recently aopointed General Manager of the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto. We are very proud of Ron, who has quite a history with the Resort. Ron’s parents met at the Resort and married, Ron Sr continues to care for the property in our Maintenance Dept. Ron Jr started working here as a young man (waterfront and in the kitchen). As a graduate of Humber and Fleming College Ron took over our kitchen as Executive Chef before heading out to see the world (Gananoque, Toronto, Hanoi) and further his career in hotel management. Ron returned to Toronto as General Manager at the Metropolitan Hotel prior to taking the position at the Delta Chelsea. We wish him well!
Proud dad – Ron Sr
Thanksgiving Weekend – book a cottage for your family and friends and let us cook your turkey!
What a Guest Sees…

Photographs sent to us by Gabriele, a Canadian Tourism Specialist from the UK. It was delightful to see the Resort through the eyes of a guest. Thank you Gaby, for sharing the shots.
Good time to mention the strength of the US dollar (for our out of country guests); Senior’s rates available for two night stays in the fall; fall colour magic taking place right here….and of course, Elmhirst’s Resort is a finalist in the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence – in the Hospitality category. What an honour! Have a wonderful weekend.
Autumn Colours
September 22, 2011 · 1 Comment
Hunter and I took a walk up to the barn this morning – it was foggy but the sun quickly came out to highlight the changing leaves. Just wanted to share the colours with you.
Solar panels are being installed on the main building and at the barn – the power generated from the panels is being sold to Ontario Hydro to meet general demand rather than being used to power the property. This green initiative uses the sun to create electrical (photovoltaic) energy.
Another great day trip takes you to Campbellford for a walk across the Ranney Suspension Bridge, a walk along the Trent River (lovely little shops for browsing), a visit to the Crowe River Conservation Area (waterfalls and swimming platforms-very peaceful).
Country Roads
September 21, 2011 · 1 Comment
The roadtrip continues with beautiful forest drives and country roads – we just wandered through the countryside and found some gems (little shops, stops and yard sales) on our way home. It was a lovely getaway (with time to check emails) and a good opportunity for me to practise my motorcycle skills (and for Peter to practise his patience skills). If you should need any ideas on a quick driving trip please ask us!
The Kawartha Fall Colour Cycling Tour is only 9 days away….have you booked your cottage?
