On the Road Again
July 31, 2011 · 1 Comment
We headed across the Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick this afternoon, after a post-wedding Brunch with the wedding party and friends, sad to leave Prince Edward Island. We travelled the coast road to Miramichi (Canada’a Irish Captial-who knew?) checking out beaches along the ocean. Subway offers a lobster sandwich, ehich we had to try….pretty good!
We are now on the coastnorth of Bathurst, L’Acadie country – we are sleeping under the stars, the flags of Canada, New Brunswick and l’Acadie….the ocean is colder here (there is a Madonna statue beside us – comforting)…..across the way we see the Gaspe…..it’s a very inviting scene. The campers are very friendly and curious about our cartop tent.
Wonderful Wedding

Congratulations to Mary and Elwood Ellis, who today celebrated their wedding with friends and family on Prince Edward island. It was a grand party, despite the unrelenting rain. We were under the tent and not a person in attendance noticed! The Ellis Family Band provided entertainment – who can sit while they play? A great time was had by all.
This morning we stumbled upon the Alberton Parade (the stores were closed during the parade) and enjoyed firetrucks, farm equipment, floats and a visit to the town bakery, where all the locals go! Despite the rain, the turnout was formidable. Got some great ideas for the Keene Parade. Thankfully there were no fires as every firetruck on the island was in the parade.
PEI Postcard

More sunshine and seashore on PEI as we drove our bikes around the island meeting friends, buying fresh seafood and enjoying another lobster feast. The potato crops are in various stages of flowering, the seaweed is being harrowed into the fields and the locals are heading to the beach before a busy weekend of tourists. We wandered into several harbours and saw the haulage truck taking a fishing boat out of the water. The infamous long walkways across the dunes to the beach entice you to take a peak at the sandy beaches on the ocean. We also drove by several wind farms on the north cape. The wind has picked up and it appears a storm is brewing…..hopefully it passes over before the wedding tomorrow.
Potatoes, Stomping Tom and more Lobster

Beautiful day on PEI, riding our bikes around the west end of the island, marvelling at the ocean cliffs and red soil, the giant potato in O’Leary (I supplied the cheesey smile at the spud museum) and of course devouring more lobster. After passing through Skinners Pond I could not stop humming Stomping Tom tunes…how is it I can’t always remember the changes to the national anthem but I never forget Bud the Spud? Watching the lobster boats come in at Westpoint makes you realize how dependent the islanders are on the ocean catch. There are many boats sitting in yards waiting for the return of cod fishing.
Meanwhile back at the Resort…..zumba rules! The combination of fishing and dancing is sounding a little latino….August approaches – book your getaway and enjoy a little summer yourself!
Anne of Green Gables

To be in Prince Edward Island is to see Anne of Green Gables….even the Royals included Anne in their visit..(that’s really me). The storms seem more intense when you are near the ocean – taking Confederation Bridge across from New Brunswick to the Island is quite a ride….especially when you can see lightning strikes. Lobster, scallops, mussels and oysters galore – now I just need sunshine.
Limited space available for the long weekend……why not start a family tradition by staying together in a cottage and enjoying doing stuff together? When did you last play Monopoly as a family or group of friends? It’s just as exciting as it used to be….the banker always cheats!

Roadtrip East Coast

First night in our made-in-Africa camper….we weathered a rain and wind storm – woke up feeling fresh and secure in the knowledge no lions were able to get to us! Peter and I are heading to Prince Edward Island for a wedding (our friends) and we are testing both the camper and the bikes on the roadtrip east. Sorry to be missing the summer guests at the Resort but anxious to see what is happening elsewhere. Tonight we are in St Andrews by the Sea in New Brunswick.
We saw another camper with bikes and asked if they wanted to race…….
Everything is shaping up for the Beer Tasting on Sunday August 14….the combination of beer and food is sure to please. The entertainment and the chatter will only add to the afternoon…..are you booked?

Dining with a View

Breakfast and lunch diners were treated to the waterfront view from their tables….the activity was non-stop with swimmers, watertoy enthusiasts, waterski and tubing guests of all ages, canoeists, boaters and boardwalk strollers. The outdoor pool was a popular place all day….what great weather for vacationing.
Meanwhile over in The Heritage Room the local flora prints are now adorning the wall – Sunday Brunch guests will be surprised to see the flowers behind the hot food and carving stations. (I took the photo in the afternoon sun – sorry for the reflection). The chairs have also been recovered – completing the work in the dining rooms. We’d love to hear your comments.
There’s still time to getaway this summer….call Wilma and ask for the August specials. Come and join us around the pool….after your massage and dinner in the dining room you will feel refreshed and ready to return to work. Guilty pleasures abound…….

Mya and her dad braved the garden tour with Bob the Gardener – Mya was attentive as Bob weaved a wonderful tale – bringing the buds and blooms to life. Despite the heat, Mya was on a mission…….she wanted to surprise her mom with a lovely bouquet of fresh flowers.
We are cutting the thistles down in the pastures….is there a practical application for thistles? I’s love to know what I can do with them……..
Niagara Falls Day Trip
July 20, 2011 · Leave a Comment
If you haven’t visited Niagara Falls recently you will be pleasantly surprised that it is a magnificent combination of new hotels, restaurants, attractions and casino action as well as the traditional but comfortable tacky stuff. See the falls from the roadway; take a walk behind the falls; board the Maid of the Mist or stand at the railing overlooking the falls to get your Niagara experience.

As a child (or first-time visitor to Canada) it is the required attraction during summer vacation – today, as I watched the crowds I realized the water rushing down is still thrilling for all ages- it’s not only mesmorizing, the spray is refreshing. Add a visit to Marineland and some outlet malls and you have a perfect family day!
