Snowkite Sunday
January 31, 2011 · 1 Comment

Kiteboarding enthusiasts left here tired but thrilled with the weekend of kitespeak and flying their kites on the lake.
Sunday was a brilliant day with just enough wind to get more people interested. Sunday Brunch guests were treated to a pretty day with colourful kites flying and all ages enjoying winter outdoors. See you next year, last weekend of January, for the 5th Annual Kiteboarding Weekend.

Ice Fishing on Rice Lake
January 30, 2011 · Leave a Comment
Ice fishing is new to Rice Lake – standing out on the ice (auger a hole, drop a line) or joining friends in a community of huts or driving/snowmobiling out to your oasis – it’s all possible. Catch of the day – perch and pan fish. Ice huts are available for rental if you want to try your hand at a line.

Snow and ice conditions are just right for the annual kiteboarding weekend – come on out and try flying a kite this weekend. There will be demos, lessons and lots of enthusiasm on the ice. Lessons are only $10. If you need warming up, check out the Chili Buffet in the Wild Blue Yonder during the day and of course, the Roast Beef Buffet in the evening.
Robbie Burns Day is bigger than you think…..several blog readers have forwarded comments – appreciated receiving a note from Ed Bowkett, who sent this photo of the Robbie Burns statue outside the Lord Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Ed’s wife Daniela was commissioned to refurbish the statue last summer.
Be a Goddess Night – United Way Fundraiser
January 26, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Tonight we attend the annual fundraising event at Peterborough Square where over 300 women dressed in finery will enjoy a pampered evening, with spa services, chocolate, champagne and decadent crepes made by Stephen Elmhirst. Martina will be at her booth doing make-overs and promoting The Spa @ Elmhirst’s – I will be volunteering for the United Way (checking-in the Goddesses and assisting with clean up). It’s a fun night with fashion shows and networking.
Robbie Burns Day

Whether you are Scottish or not, who could resist celebrating the day of the “The Bard” with haggis on January 25. Robbie Burns (born 1759) is best known for penning Auld Lang Syne (New Year’s ritual). Haggis (sheep’s pluck encased in stomach) is served today at many fine restaurants – wear your kilt and drink some ale and pay tribute to the famous Scot. (Unfortunately we have no haggis today).
Ron and Viviana Mackay celebrate Robbie Burns Day in Argentina…thanks for the photo.

Winning Winemakers Dinner
January 22, 2011 · Leave a Comment
Chef Zab (below with hat) and his team delivered an amazing menu of delectables with perfect wine pairings of Hidden Bench Wines. Winemaker Harald Thiel (pictured below) presented the wines and introduced the cheese (Niagara Gold and Comfort Cream). I was very proud of our kitchen and our servers and our property! Thank you to all who participated in the event…..the Silent Auction raised $800 for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Peter Elmhirst’s Preserves were popular items (Chili sauce, mustard pickle and freezer jam) -who knew? Outdoors it was cold and snowy but indoors it was warm with laughter, good food and drink and fellowship. You won’t want to miss the next one! It was also a big night for snowmobilers….braving the cold but loving the ride.

Downhill Skiing at Brimacombe
January 19, 2011 · Leave a Comment

It was a perfect day for downhill skiing at Brimacombe , formerly known as the Oshawa Ski Club (easily accessible for our guests by car). Lovely snowflakes falling, no line-ups, separate Terrain Park areas for snowboarders and trick skiers, great Magic Carpet for beginners and a lovely lodge to boot. I arrived with skis in tow; proud of how shiny my ski boots were – the boots literally fell apart as I walked to the ski rack…….good way to check out the rental department. I tried Head Demo skis and enjoyed the afternoon. With 21 runs, 11 lifts and two chalets this is a great family destination. Visit www.brimacombe.ca for more information.
